Ennis Tag Rugby quiz night

Being a young (well, youngish) professional living in an urban environment without a regular sporting outlet, it’s almost inevitable that I would end up playing Tag Rugby during the summer months.

Our local tag league hosted a table quiz for charity following last night’s programme of games, with almost all teams in the league entering a team. As we obviously had nothing else to do, our team entered three teams!

The questions were mostly* well-thought-out and the standard of answering was high.  The winning team finished up on 56 out of 60**, with my own brigade in joint-third on 54. Yes, it was that tight.

HQ Round 9: Answers

Finally, finally.  Here are the answers to the Dodgy Covers round from early today.

With it, we are now done with the raking over of the luke-warm coals from last week’s Habitat for Humanity table quiz.

I’ve milked this for all its worth just in case it’s another 4 years before I get to write another one!

HQ Round 9: Dodgy covers

And so the end is near, it’s time to face the final curtain…

That’s right, we’ve done it our way here on the blog with our re-run of the Habitat for Humanity quiz taking almost two weeks, and all that for just nine out of the 10 rounds!

Here’s the final one. It’s an audio round: Dodgy cover versions.

It’s a simple concept, you’ll hear a clip of an unusual cover version of a well-known song and you have to say the name of the song and who’s doing this version. On the night, this round was worth 20 points as we wanted both answers for each song.

HQ Round 10: Friday March 13

I know what you’re thinking. “Surely there can’t be any rounds left from the Habitat for Humanity quiz?!”

Well, I’m afraid you’re wrong. And there’s still one to go after this! Even though this one here may seem a little out of date at this point.

To explain, this round was originally called On This Day, as it is based completely on questions to do with Friday March 13 (the night of the quiz). As it’s now Monday March 23, I’m worried that this ship may have sailed. Oh dear.

Don’t make me… hurry

Last night, at 7.30pm, I was in an Ennis pub (which I won’t name here) to take part in the Special Olympics All-County quiz, hosted on Clare FM. Why 7.30? Well, we’d be told (several times) that the quiz would start at 8pm sharp. This time didn’t go to waste though as the main invigilator read us out the rules, in detail, from an email she’d printed off, in a manner that suggested the table quiz being a new-fangled concept we needed help understanding.  That said, being told that each round would have five questions did cause us to do a double take!

When did it start? 8.20pm.  This is indicative of the timing problems that would plague this quiz. At 8pm Clare FM broadcast a news bulletin, followed by an ad break, followed by a Saw Doctors tune. Finally we got to hear the voice of the host but, even then, we still had to listen to his explanation of the rules, in detail once more, before we could kick off.

Round one (the Mixed Round) started off and the host flew through five general knowledge questions. This didn’t seem like a problem at the time as we knew them all. Great start, 5/5, easy!

Round two (Cocktails) followed very quickly. “Cocktails?” I asked out loud. “Good luck to ya, if you’re not a big drinker.” It turned out we weren’t big drinkers. We only knew three of them straight off but, as we do, we noted down the other two to mull over. The only problem being that we weren’t going to get and thinking time as the collectors were out of the blocks almost as soon as he’d finished repeating question 5.

This didn’t seem accidental though as, on air, the host almost immediately proceeded to round three (Inventions). We only got two of these right but I won’t complain about that. Questions are like the cards you’re dealt and everyone who’s in a quiz has to cope with them as best they can. What’s hard to understand though is structuring the quiz itself in such an awkward and unfriendly manner.

HQ Round 8: Photoshop round

Picture rounds can be very boring. Pictures rounds can be very samey (how many times did we see Grainne Seoige last autumn?). Picture rounds can be almost indecypherible due to crappy photocopying.

I attempted to address all these issues with this round in last week’s quiz. Firstly, the photocopying issue was taken out of play by the fact that we had our big screen in action and the pics were being shown on a loop with the round was on.  Secondly, instead of just showing you simple pictures, I hoped to get everyone to engage the brain by passing these photos through various Photoshop filters.

It worked better for some than for others! Anyway, click more… to have a look.
