Move along

Nothing to see here, I’m afraid.  Gilligan’s Quiz Night returned last night but the evening’s quiz master (politely) asked me not to include their quiz on this site.  I will honour this request.

It’s probably for the best, mind you as my team got absolutely hammered (and I don’t mean in the drinking way).  We ended up on 74/100, languishing in fourth or fifth place, miles behind the winners on 92. Yikes.

It was revealed afterwards that one of the members of that team had recently won a contest called the ‘Brain of Ireland’.  I can’t say I’d ever heard of this title before but it certainly sounds impressive. It also lessened the shame (slightly) of losing by such a margin.

We’ll return to our usual transmission, later this week.

A clue for #12.

Following last week’s hiatus, I resumed my usual Tuesday night travels to Gilligan’s, Claremorris, and its Quiz Night.  Alas, it wasn’t to be a triumphal return.

Myself and my randomly assigned team had one of ‘those’ nights. Mental blanks on answers you know, changing correct answers to incorrect ones, mishearing the question – we did them all. We still came in second, four points behind the winners, but it all felt a bit self-inflicted.

Hopefully, I used up enough bad luck and bad judgement to leave me in the clear for at least my next four quizzes!

“Two parts of the eye were discussing who told better puns. The debate raged on, ’til one said to the other, ‘You, my friend, are simply the pupil. I am by far the cornea of the two of us.’…”

Boom, and indeed, boom.

Getting back to the point of the blog, after a day of ‘batten down the hatches‘, I now have the time to post the answers to the questions I posted on Wednesday.

Eye hope you weren’t blinded by …. [I need to stop it. Seriously!]

One week on from my discovery of the weekly quiz in Gilligan’s Pub, Claremorris, I headed back to see if my first visit had been a happy fluke.

I was on my own this week as my usual buddies were all otherwise occupied.  It’s a benefit of the random draw method of team selection at this event that you can turn up solo and not feel like Johnny-no-mates. So I paid my €3 entry fee and got assigned to a team.

The turnout must have been down on the previous week as teams were made up of just three people. I got John, a local chap who unashamedly watches soap operas (i.e. a very useful man to have on a team) and Aiden, a retired gentleman from Dunmore.  Aiden may have an intriguing back story but, alas, we didn’t get to go into it too deeply.  He did reveal to us that he got 97% in Ancient Greek when he did the Leaving Cert. Such an achievement commands respect!

Here are the answers to the questions I posted yesterday.

I’m afraid I still can’t remember the missing 10th question so that’ll have to stay a mysterious void. The ‘lost’ question, if you will.

Last night I chanced upon a surprising delight: Tuesday Quiz Night in Gilligan’s Pub, Claremorris, Co. Mayo.

My buddy Ger saw this simple poster earlier in the week and, presuming the organisers meant to say “table quiz”, he got a team together. However, when we arrived we were soon enlightened as to the error in this assumption.

Up-and-running since God was a boy (“around 20 years”), this event allows those folks so inclined as to want a quizzing ‘fix’ so sate this need every Tuesday night from October to May. To take part though, you need to be aware of the rules:

  • No prearranged teams. All competitor’s names are put into a hat and drawn randomly.
  • Tables exchange answer sheets with their neighbours for the purposes of correction.
  • Entry fee: €3 per person. Prize: €10 per person.
  • There is a rota for the role of weekly quizmaster with everyone expected to have a go at writing and reading the questions at least once during the year.
